The most important asset you have as a blogger is your email list. This is your crew, your audience, your tribe. They are the ones who will come back and keep reading your content and who you will build enough trust with so they will buy from you (either products you create or promote) or click on the affiliate links for the products you recommend. While you can, and will, definitely make money running display and affiliate ads on your blog, your biggest money making opportunity is going to be with your email list. The million dollar bloggers out there are able to make between $1-$5 in revenue per email subscriber each month!! If you have a list of 10,000 subscribers you can make up to $50,000 in revenue off that list per month! It’s crazy.

If that happens, I’ll be worth billions and I’ll take each of you out to a steak dinner! However, in real estate, you can only lock in one set of tenants and raise the rent once a year. In the stock market, you are a passive investor with no control over dividend payouts or other strategic management decisions. With a retail store, you can only capture your neighborhood traffic. Hi Sam! I love your site. We should definitely connect. I’m a school counselor and recently launched a site for parents to address pertinent teen topics. Like you, I struggle with the ultimate service I’d eventually offer on my site, but Ramsay’s idea is a great start. He’s absolutely right that people are looking for fresh content for their sites! Best of luck to you and I hope we can collaborate.

I will come back to your site often as I slowly go through the process of creating my site and then trying to bring advertising to it. I have time to learn. I have the year or two that it will take to: get pregnant, carry a child, and take maternity leave. Hopefully by the end of maternity leave I will have a successful functioning blog that can bring in the money we need in order to raise a family on one income.

Wonderful tips. The only thing I don’t agree with is using Adsense, since the pay is way too small for the huge amount of space the ads take and how much traffic you’re sending their way. But other than that .. really really cool advice and numbers 🙂

Sam thanks for the great post. I found your blog only a year ago. For a long time I lacked direction how to start a blog. Your post was very clear how to get it started and why I should not wait to start the blog. I started my own blog couple of months ago. Thanks for your article.

One of the ideas in this article seem like a good fit for me, and thanks to your great cross-linking to other posts of yours, I got much more detail to help me out.
Interested It took me close to 2 years to bring my online income to the $1,500-$2,000/month range, and sadly that’s fallen off a bit (100% my fault though, for focusing on other things). I still earn decent passive income though for work that was done 3+ years ago, which is always nice.
Choose a blogging platform. Lastly, creating quality content that your potential readers want to read can take even more time. For example, it took me more than 72 hours to put this piece of content together (including images and videos). Overall, blogging doesn’t have to take much time. It’s completely up to you to decide how seriously you want to take it.
