The answer, of course, is that it depends. But I’m going to help you understand why it depends so that you can think about how these factors translate into your own ideas for a blog.

Awesome post – I am really inspired and happy to build up my blog step by step the way you have! I launched my first for-sale product last summer, which was a blogging course called Making Sense of Affiliate Marketing. I make around $20,000 to $50,000 a month from this course, and because I have already created and finished the course, it's a nice form of somewhat passive income.
Great article Jamie! I’ve only ever used affiliate links on my blog but recently I’ve been getting a lot of text-link offers. A typical email will ask a link to be put into one of my articles (relating to the content or website they want to link back to) and they offer anywhere between $50-$150 per link. Given the nature of your article, I just wanted to check your thoughts on such offers. Are they legitimate or should I have red flags go up as I’d hate to think they increase spam or worse yet affect google ranking or break basic rules of website T&Cs. Again, I’m not familiar in monetizing via such offers and googling about it didn’t give me much info. Thanking you in advance.
Santel Thank you so much for taking the time to share a bundle of knowledge. I am very new to blogging. I’ve been compiling my content in WordPress but have not gone live as of yet. Reading your article has helped me tremendously and greatly inspired me as well.
My webinar software of choice is Crowdcast. If you want to go with a free option that has less features then check out Google Hangouts. You can try AdClerks or use a plugin like WPAdvancedAds to secure some direct advertisements.

Just make sure you offer them something they truly want. That might seem obvious, but you’d be surprised how many people spend weeks or months creating a product that hardly sells. They’ll create the product that they want to create, because they think it’s what their audience needs, only to discover their audience isn’t interested.

I totally agree with you. Blogging is not a scam. But it does take a ton of work. Usually people see blog income reports and assume it’s easy to make money blogging just became we can blog whenever and wherever we want.
Ergh, I hate being the slow kid slowing up the works. A lot of people think you get rich quick or something. Start a website and they assume it is easy money. There is money to be made, but it’s not easy and it don’t come rolling in. It does require time and work. Depending on the site, you might make more or less, even nothing. Anyway don’t give up and keep plugging away.

NOTE: I’ll get into this in the section on Helping Other Bloggers, but be sincere in your help. If you only seek out to get something out of someone else, you won’t form a relationship with that person. I’ve liked Stephanie’s blog and content since I first saw it. Hi! This was hands down one of the most helpful posts I’ve ever read about how to make blogging a realistic career path. I love how honest and open you were in both suggesting the good but reminding me of the bad choices out there, some of which I know I would/have made. I found your blog after hanging my head from another post on yet another site saying to forget about blogging as your source of income. Completely ignoring that advice and seeking out some that matched my determination, I found yours and so glad I did! Thank you again for this awesome post – it’s officially made it into my favorites bar to come back to.
Yes, you can make money by having display ads on your blog. If you’re just getting started, maybe you should try it just to earn your first few pennies and get that rush of making money.

Posted at 21:59h, 25 October Reply Thanks for sharing all this useful and relevant information Jon. The most interesting and surprising lesson was the one where you mentioned that spending a lot of time on social media outlets doesn’t really help. I also specifically liked how you set the tone about the fact that you’re not just a blogger and that you’re an expert…etc. This is some confidence needed to be successful in anything.
I remember a lot of Internet entrepreneur, were bloggers few years back and had started their career as blogger. Great information all in one place. I am new to blogging and having a blast. Deciding on a niche was a bitch. I am interested in so many things that I had to follow all of them until I found my groove. It’s a big problem not settling in one niche. At the moment I am in two niches and celebrating the focus. Xx
Krystal K. And finally, you might consider creating affiliate relationships. While typically offering less commission than straight-up selling your own time, affiliate recommendations do offer the convenience of zero fulfillment. Once one of your readers takes advantage of an affiliate recommendation, it’s the recommended company’s job to fulfill that new customer’s order.
